Visiting Île de Ré: the complete guide

Road to Île de Ré from La Rochelle

Linked to La Rochelle by a bridge, Île de Ré is a flagship destination on the Atlantic coast: picturesque villages, fine-sand beaches, cycle paths and salt marshes. Here is how to make the most of it.

How to get to Île de Ré?

From La Rochelle, the island is about twenty minutes away via the Île de Ré bridge (toll in high season). In summer, traffic can be heavy and parking tricky. A VTC from La Rochelle lets you arrive relaxed, dropped off as close as possible to your destination.

The villages not to miss

Saint-Martin-de-Ré

A UNESCO World Heritage site for its Vauban fortifications, the island's capital charms with its port, shops and famous ice-cream makers.

La Flotte

Its medieval market and postcard port make it one of France's most beautiful villages. Ideal for a waterfront lunch.

Ars-en-Ré and Le Bois-Plage

Flowered lanes, the iconic black-and-white bell tower, direct beach access: the Ré charm at its purest.

Beaches, cycling and salt marshes

Île de Ré also means nearly 100 km of cycle paths, large beaches and the famous salt marshes where fleur de sel is harvested. Book your bikes ahead in summer.
