What to do in La Rochelle? The must-sees

The Old Port of La Rochelle and its towers

A city of art and history on the Atlantic coast, La Rochelle charms visitors with its maritime heritage, lively streets and the closeness of Île de Ré. Here are the must-sees, and our tips to get around with ease.

1. The Old Port and the three towers

The beating heart of the city, the Old Port is overlooked by the Saint-Nicolas tower, the Chaîne tower and the Lantern tower. A stroll along the quays is a must on arrival.

2. The La Rochelle Aquarium

One of the largest private aquariums in Europe: sharks, jellyfish, sea turtles… A perfect family visit, especially on a rainy day.

3. The markets and historic centre

From the arcades of rue du Palais to the covered central market hall, La Rochelle is best enjoyed on foot. Seafood, pineau des Charentes and local specialities make the market a gourmet stop.

4. The beaches: from Les Minimes to Châtelaillon

Les Minimes beach, close to the centre, is ideal for a quick dip. For more space, head to Châtelaillon-Plage. A private driver saves you parking headaches in high season.

5. A day trip to Île de Ré

20 minutes from the centre via the bridge, Île de Ré deserves a full day. To prepare, read our complete guide to visiting Île de Ré, or be guided by our VTC tourist tours.

How to get around La Rochelle?

The centre is easily walkable, but for the beaches, the airport, Île de Ré or nearby towns, a VTC in La Rochelle is the most comfortable option. At Sam Drive Service the price is fixed and known in advance, 7 days a week.
